Can DIY treatments rid head lice? The short answer is maybe, and the long answer is that many do-it-yourself home remedies are messy, require multiple treatments, follow up, are extremely time-consuming, and in the end, may not kill all head lice and nits. And if you miss some of the eggs, they will hatch, and you must start all over again.
Some DIY lice removal techniques suggest covering the hair with almond or olive oil, then shampooing, rinsing and repeating – every day for a week, followed by two weeks of daily combing. Other removal treatments require mixing olive oil with essential oils, applying to the scalp overnight for at least 12 hours, and then combing out the hair, shampooing, rinsing and repeating.
Over-the-counter solutions don’t necessarily work either. According to a 2016 study, a strain of “super lice,” bugs that have genetically mutated over time to become resistant to traditional methods of lice removal has evolved across the United States.
The easiest, most effective and most organic way to get rid of head lice is perhaps, the least known. Lice removal clinics that employ an FDA-cleared device such as AirAllé® Lice Device by Larada Sciences, kills head lice and 99.2 percent of nits in a single treatment, lasting about an hour.
The device blows hot air to dehydrate and kill lice and eggs. Because the AirAllé procedure is so effective at eliminating lice nits (which are the hardest for traditional lice products to remove), the likelihood of needing a follow-up treatment is minor.
Once your appointment is over, there are no additional messy oils, laborious combing or repeat treatments. Professionals do suggest preventative shampoos and conditioners, which are available at most lice removal offices.
A quick search of “lice clinics” in your area reveal nearby certified lice removal technicians. If you live in the Thousand Oaks area, the professionals at Lice Clinics of America have an expert staff and child-friendly offices, and are ready to help!
